A Brief History of
the Scalzi Family Winemaking
Carmine's (Charlie) first vintage with family in Australia began in 1960 when he assisted his Father and Uncle making Grenache in their Norwood Home. Today along with his older son, Felice, and wife, Ennia, Charlie continues the passion and art of winemaking in the famous Barossa Valley.
Prior to coming to Australia and learning the art of winemaking, Carmine would help his Grandfather and his family who had been growing grapes and making wines since 1800 and earlier with many generations before them. The family land and home was on the famous Roman Road Via Appia which is still being used today, running through the Valle Caudina and the foot hills of the Mt. Taburno, where some world-famous wines are still produced today.
The family produce and wines would be bought by merchants and then sold to famous restaurants in the city of Napoli, Amalfi Coast and surrounding towns.
The Grass Roots of Scalzi Wines
The Scalzi Family winemaking tradition dates back to the Roman days and beyond.
Our family lived and farmed land in the famous Valle Caudina of Campania, Italy.
Amongst the farming land they cultivated vines, producing wine and other food products, such as cheese, prosciutto and other.
Besides serving the local community the produce was sold to merchants that came from the nearby city who would come to the country towns to purchase from the producing farming families. They would then on - sell in the rich city area s and famous tourist destination s of Napoli, Amalfi Coast, Positano, Sorrento, Capri and surrounding areas.
Our family owned land in the famous and rich soil of the Valle Caudina and the hills of Mount Taburno. Today the area still boasts fame for its grape varieties including Aglianico, Fiano, Falanghina and Coda Di Volpe.
This area is also famous for the Via Appia that the Romans built in 312 AC connecting Rome to the Adriatic Sea. The 360 mile long road was one of the most important roads built by the Romans that ran from Roma to Brindisi and still exists today.
The strategy of building Via Appia was to connect Rome with the Adriatic Sea. This made the Port of Brindisi one of Italy ’s most important commercial ports, giving the Romans a commercial route that would connect Greece and the Orient (East Asia).
The Caudin Valley is located between the Partenio and Monte Taburno. Monte Taburno is a group of mountains in the Apennines to the west of central Italy with a highest peak of 1,393m.
In 1960 when I migrated with my mother Carmela, father Felice and sister we brought all that rich knowledge with us, allowing us to start the new chapter of the Scalzi Family Winemaking traditions from the Old World to the New World.
As you can see, I’ve been blessed to inherit such tradition and blessed that now that tradition can be passed on to my son and grandsons so that we can continue those same traditions for generations to come in our beautiful country called Australia.
